Anne Schofield

Mrs Anne Schofield, our Principal, has an established reputation as an Advocate, having 29 years legal experience. She started her legal career as a Magistrate in 1981 following which she worked for Atkinson Cleasby and Satchu, Advocates, in Mombasa and Rajni K Somaia, Advocate, in Kisumu before opening her own firm. She was the founder of the firm of Anne Schofield and Kasamani, Advocates. The firm was on the panel of many financial and insurance institutions as well as major corporate clients. Her role as senior partner in the firm included acting for banks in all areas of legal work including litigation.
After leaving Kenya in 1988, Anne worked within the offshore banking sector in the Cayman Islands as a technical auditor and was admitted as an attorney-at-law joining the legal firm of Brooks and Brooks as an associate. Anne has experience in offshore banking, trusts and corporate management.
Anne also had a six month consultancy with Cable and Wireless, Caribbean Division. She was the adviser to the company’s regional relocation project and advised on work permit and regulatory matters.
On leaving the Cayman Islands in 1995, Anne worked as a consultant for the Gibraltar Government Law Revision and Consolidation Project. Gibraltar is an offshore jurisdiction and Anne was responsible for approving over 150 laws for publication which included the Companies Act and the Financial Services Acts.
In 2000, Anne joined RadcliffesLeBrasseur, Solicitors, a leading London law firm as a consultant and Hassans International, the largest law firm in Gibraltar. As a consultant with Hassans, Anne was involved in business development. She has extensive international contacts with financial institutions and international lawyers.
As well as working as a consultant for the law firms, Anne was appointed a consultant for the Commonwealth Secretariat for 8 months on the Commonwealth Principles on the Relationship between the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.
At an international level, Anne is also known for her work in the field of judicial independence and has brought together chief justices, government ministers, lawyers and academics from Africa, Europe, North America and the Caribbean under the auspices of the Human Rights Today Series. She is known for her integrity and intolerance to corruption of any kind. Under her leadership, the Firm declares its anti-corruption stand and does not accept payment of fees from any proceeds of crime or corruption.
Derek Schofield

Derek Schofield is the firm’s consultant in the London office. He has over 35 years experience on the Bench in Kenya, the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar and England. He was appointed a Resident Magistrate in Kenya in 1974, being promoted to Senior Resident Magistrate and, in 1982, as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya. He left the Kenya Bench in 1987 in circumstances which are well–documented. During his time in Kenya he presided over all types of cases, including those involving Constitutional issues.
From 1988 to 1996, Justice Schofield was a Judge of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands during which time he presided over a wide variety of cases. In particular he dealt with many cases involving money laundering and the tracing of assets, the Cayman Islands being a major offshore financial centre. In the absence of the Chief Justice, he acted as the Authority under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with the United States of America in his capacity as the most senior Puisne Judge.
Justice Schofield was Chief Justice of Gibraltar from 1996 to 2009. Gibraltar is a financial centre and many of the law firms deal with corporate law and trust and funds management. As Chief Justice, he presided over the most complex litigation arising out the financial centre business. Gibraltar has a written Constitution based on the Westminster model and Justice Schofield made several major Constitutional decisions.
In his 13 years in Gibraltar, he also dealt with complex civil litigation, including actions in tort, and presided over many serious criminal cases. Justice Schofield is known as a Judge of the highest integrity and courage. He has also sat and continues to sit as a Recorder (part-time Judge) in London from 1996.

Gordon Schofield
Gordon graduated from Leeds University in 2007 with an Honours Degree in International Relations. After graduation, Gordon undertook internships at the BBC World Service after which he worked at the Treasury Solicitors in London before joining DLA Piper, an international law firm in London which specializes in public relations and governance.
Having left Kenya as a child and having lived in the Cayman Islands, the United Kingdom and Gibraltar, Gordon returned to Kenya in 2009 and joined the Firm as its office manager. Gordon is responsible for systems and ensuring that the Firm maintains high quality delivery of services. Since joining the Firm, he has been working in the Property and Trade and Investments Department, and brings an innovative and dynamic approach to the Practice.

Schofield & Associates recognises the need for fast and efficient service as well as maintaining the highest standards of integrity. As such, the Firm employs two secretaries and uses a firm of Chartered Secretaries for all corporate searches, filings and registrations in both the Companies Registry and the Lands Office. We also have two part-time clerks who operate from our Thika offices.
